Running a film festival is a lot of work, and requires many resources. From promotional materials to filmmaker travel to waste created from tickets and concessions, film festivals have the potential to create negative environmental impacts. Here at Planet in Focus, we try our best to reduce our footprint by being mindful of the ways our festival uses its resources. Partnering with Bullfrog Power is one of the ways that we take responsibility for our energy use. As sponsor of the 2012 Spotlight: Renewable Energy and SustainabilityBullfrog Power brings you a film program that inspires us to think about energy differently, more responsibly, and inspires innovation. Bullfrog Power will also offset the energy consumption of our Festival venues by injecting the local energy grid with clean, renewable energy.

Can you tell us what it means to use ‘green energy’? What are the benefits of using Bullfrog Power at home?

Anyone can actively choose—and help to advance—clean, green energy in Canada with Bullfrog Power. Bullfrogpowering your house, apartment or condo with green energy is easy. You continue to draw conventional electricity or natural gas from the energy systems—just as you always have—and Bullfrog Power injects green electricity or green natural gas (or both if you choose) onto the respective energy system to match the amount of electricity or natural gas your home uses.

By making the choice for green energy with Bullfrog, Canadians reduce their environmental impact, support the development of new green energy projects in Canada, and ultimately help take action on climate change and air pollution and create a cleaner, healthier world.

What inspires Bullfrog to be “green”?

Prior to Bullfrog, Canadians had no choice on where their energy came from and had to accept conventional, polluting energy sources. We were inspired to create a market mechanism that enables homes and business to advance the development of green energy. With Bullfrog, Canadian homes and businesses are able to choose green energy, helping to put more renewable power on the grid, and ultimately influencing our energy landscape.

Since 2005, the Bullfrog Power community has achieved significant results. Across Canada, we have displaced 426,811 tonnes of CO2 from the environment. Bullfrog Power has injected 1,560,227 MWh of green electricity and 76,127 GJ of green natural gas on the Canadian energy systems on behalf of the bullfrogpowered community.

Is there a film that Bullfrog is most excited to see at the Festival this year?

The film that Bullfrog is most excited to see at this year’s festival is the Toronto premiere of Northwords, directed by Geoff Morrison. In the film, award-winning CBC journalist Shelagh Rogers invites Canadian writers to Torngat Mountains National Park in Labrador. The goal of the film – to connect the idea of the North with relatable, personal experience – is an important one for anyone trying to understand the challenges involved with climate change and protecting our environment.

About Bullfrog Power:

Bullfrog Power, Canada’s 100 per cent green energy provider, offers renewable energy solutions that enable homes and businesses to reduce their environmental impact and help create a cleaner, healthier world. Bullfrog’s green electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear. A clean, renewable alternative to fossil fuel-based natural gas, Bullfrog’s green natural gas is produced in Canada from biogas facilities that have met strict environmental criteria as defined by ICF International. As a Certified B Corporation, Bullfrog Power meets higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations are required to consider the impact of their decisions on their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and the environment. Thousands of Canadian homes and businesses are doing their part to address climate change and air pollution by switching to green energy with Bullfrog Power.
